新西兰的NCEA教育体制下，学生和学校都有很大的自由度来排课和选课，许多学校开出厨师，咖啡制作等特色课程。但是，只有修读新西兰大学认可的科目，才能获得进入大学的学分，而厨师等课程是不被大学承认。
因此，针对大学要求，修读指定的科目是非常重要的，否则有可能浪费时间和精力学习，却不被大学承认。
