TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR

WELCOME TO
Takapuna Grammar School
and your new Homestay Experience!!!

Welcome to Takapuna Grammar School, and to the new experience of being a “kiwi homestay student”.  Many of you have travelled thousands of kilometres to get here, and most of you will find that the way of life here in New Zealand is very different to that in your own country.  The traditions, language, and way of doing things here in New Zealand may seem strange to you at first, but eventually you will become used to “the kiwi” way of doing things!

The student and host family relationship is the key to a successful experience.  The school goes to great lengths to select a host family for you.  One which you will feel comfortable with and enjoy coming home to after school.  Warmth, understanding and hospitality and three crucial attributes the school looks for in every host family.

In return, you must try your very best to fit in and participate as much as possible in your host family’s daily activities.  This may include things such as helping with the dishes, and even walking the dog.  It certainly includes keeping your room tidy and helping out some times with small things around the home.  You will be regarded as one of the family, long after the completion of your time here at Takapuna Grammar School.

Here is some information which may help you to assimilate into the home and family you will be staying with over the next few weeks or months.

One of the most important things to remember is that communication and honesty are the keys to happiness.  It is a good idea to ask lots of questions and become familiar with the routine of the family when you first arrive.  For example, you could ask what time your family usually has dinner; where you should put your dirty washing etc?  You should ask what you could help with around the home by way of cleaning or even taking your host brother/sister to the park for a play.

Every homestay family is unique and different – no two are alike!  Some have children; some do not.  Some have pets; some do not.  Most homestay’s will have routines and rules which you must recognise; for example, all homestay’s will expect you to keep your room clean and tidy.  This means no plates or cups left in your room; you must vacuum and dust your room once weekly; you should be responsible for the changing of your bed linen and placing all your dirty clothes where you are told.

Your Responsibilities:

It is very important that you realise that this homestay you are at is just that, a homestay, and not a Hotel!  The family you are with have opened their doors and hearts to you and are hoping for a positive experience.

An important thing to remember is that your host family will feel that you are part of their family, and this means that you will have the same rules and expectation that their own children will have, or that the school has asked them to put in place; for example, you must negotiate a curfew with your new family.  Your family have been given reasonable guidelines to work with, including curfews – and they will expect you to keep to your word and be honest and open about where you are going and what you are doing.  If you feel you must lie about where you are going or how late you will be home; it is probably a good indication that you are not supposed to be in that place, our out that late!!  You must talk with your homestay family about what time you are expected to be home, either on the weekend or on week days.  Ideally, you should be spending time studying on the week days, but there may be exceptions and again, you must ask your homestay parents if it is acceptable to go out during the week.

Please listen to the instructions that your homestay give you regarding the routine in the home.  This includes things such as TURNING OFF YOUR HEATER, TURNING OFF YOUR COMPUTER, MAKING YOUR BED, HANGING UP WET TOWELS, CLEANING UP AFTER YOURSELF, PUTTING RUBBISH IN THE RUBBISH BIN etc.  If your homestay has to persistently ask you to do these simple things, this can cause a big problem.  Again, although the homestay is your ‘home’, you must be respectful of the rules and requests of your homestay.

You will need to communicate clearly and honestly with your homestay parents regarding your whereabouts/intended plans, and time you will be home.  Your homestay parent may feel that these times are a little too late for you, and if this is the case, you will have to listen to your host parents and respect their guidelines.

You must always communicate with your homestay regarding your whereabouts.  If you are continually late home (after your curfew), your homestay will contact the school and action will be taken.  Your parents/agent may be informed about this, and further action may be taken by the school.

Alcohol, Drugs and other issues

It is illegal to drink alcohol under the age of 18 years in New Zealand.  If you are caught drinking or with alcohol during your time here at TGS, there may be serious consequences.  Your homestay has been asked to inform the school if they suspect that you are drinking alcohol or taking any illegal substances.   There have been incidents in the past where students have been sent home to their country of origin for taking or possessing alcohol/drugs.  Please be responsible when it comes to these matters.

The legal age for having sex in New Zealand is 16.  Under no circumstances are you to take a boyfriend/girlfriend to your homestay bedroom and close the door.  Your homestay has also been informed about these rules, so please do not place your homestay in an awkward situation wherein they feel they have to contact the school to inform of such a situation.

Showering and Toiletries:

Power and water are very expensive in New Zealand – and it is usual to have one shower per day (approximately 5 minutes).  There will probably be other members of the family in the home who want to use the bathroom (especially in the mornings), so please make your time in the bathroom brief.  Girls will have to ask their host mother what they should do to dispose of their used personal toiletries.  You do not flush used sanitary towels down the toilet.
It is not appropriate to shower very late at night (for example when you arrive home after 9.00pm).

You are responsible for your own toiletries; shampoo/conditioner/body wash/toothpaste etc, and ask your homestay host where you should keep these items.   It is your responsibility to provide your own toiletries during your stay.

Meals:

New Zealand food will naturally be quite different than that in your own country.  It is important that you try out new foods so please be open minded about what you are eating.  The homestay will try to accommodate your requirements, but generally they will be cooking the food that the family likes and you will need to get used to the new styles and types of food provided.  You should discuss with your homestay family your likes and dislikes, and they will listen to you and try to accommodate you to a certain degree.  However, please remember to try the “kiwi” style food that they provide.  It is really quite delicious once you get used to it!!

If you are not going to be home for a meal, you should let your homestay family know either that morning, or you must text/phone them and let them know BY 4.00PM that you will not be home for your meal.  It is a polite thing to do to let your family know well in advance if you are not going to be home for dinner.

It is VERY IMPORTANT in New Zealand to show appreciation for meals cooked and served.  A small “thank you” or “that was delicious” goes a long way in a Kiwi Homestay, and is the polite response when you have eaten your meal.  It is etiquette to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ whenever anyone asks you if you would like something.  It is a tradition that when you have finished your meal, you say “thank you”.  This is very important to remember and it is considered rude if you do not do so.  Also, at the end of the meal you should always offer to help clear up the dishes and help with the washing up.

Spending too much time in your room:

Everyone likes to have some quiet and private time, however, host families generally like you to be part of their family – this means not spending too much time in your room with your door closed.  This might be seen as a sign that you are unhappy or not enjoying yourself in their home.  It is natural to want to spend some time alone, but you should try to ensure that you spend at least some time each day with the family, chatting about what you have done that day or asking them what they have done that day.

Getting up out of bed:

When your homestay requests you get out of bed, please do not go back to sleep!  Make sure you get up early enough to be at school on time.

If you are not well and cannot attend school, you will need to let your homestay know before they leave for work.  Your homestay parents will need to leave a message at the school on the Absence Line, letting her know that you are sick.  You may need to get your homestay to take you to the doctor.  You will need to bring a note to your form teacher on your return (this is a legal requirement).   If you are away for three days or more you will need a doctor’s certificate.  You will need to take the doctor’s certificate to Ms Baker on your return to school.   Also remember to retain your receipts of you have to go to the doctor, and also if you have to purchase prescription medicine.  You will need to see Mrs Brennan with your receipts on your return to school.  Mrs Brennan deals with all insurance matters.

School hours are 8.45am on all days except Wednesdays which is 9.45am.  School finishes at 3.05pm every day.

Computers:

Although we realise that internet and email useage is an important form of communication for most students, useage needs to be discussed with your homestay.  New Zealand households do not have unlimited internet access, unlike most other parts of the world.  Internet connections are very expensive in New Zealand, and your homestay fee does not cover internet/computer useage.  You will be expected to contribute to the internet, and this will be between $20-50 per month, depending on the amount of useage (even if you are using the homestay’s home computer).  The exact amount of time allowed on the computer, and the exact amount you will be required to pay is a private matter between you and your homestay.  Vodafone sell pre-pay broadband sticks and these can be topped up when needed.  For those students who have their own notebooks/lap tops, your useage must be restricted to 1-2 HOURS MAXIMUM per day, and your homestay is encouraged to keep a check on this and report to the school if they feel you are using the internet excessively.   If you have your own computer/pc in your room, this does not mean you have unlimited time on your computer.  There is to be NO DOWNLOADING of any kind.   We encourage you to use your computer mainly for study purposes, however, also recognise you will want to keep in touch with your family in your country of origin but please keep this family contact to a minimum, and we would suggest that you would only need to contact your family once or twice per week, at the most.  If you have Skype in your homestay, you need to realise that the video link uses a huge amount of mb’s.    You MUST TURN YOUR MODEM OFF AT NIGHT and disconnect from the internet.  If you do not respect the guidelines of your homestay regarding the internet useage, you risk being disconnected from the internet all together.

Computer Useage at Takapuna Grammar School:

Soon after starting school, you will be issued a student ID number, and along with this, a Network and Knowledge Net login.  Internet useage: there is a monthly download limit of 170mb.  You will be given warnings at 150mb.  If you exceed this usage, you will be blocked from using the internet and will have to see Mr Wynn, the Deputy Principal.  Please do use the internet for appropriate useage while you are at the school, ie: research/assignments etc, but do not download games/movies and the like, as this will severely affect your useage levels.

Telephone:

You can purchase telephone calling cards from local shops.  These cards enable you to make phone calls home for a very limited cost.  PLEASE do not use your homestay’s telephone for mobile calls.  Mobile calls in New Zealand are very expensive, and your homestay may ask you to reimburse them for any mobile calls you make.  Also, please do not speak on the phone late in the evening/early morning.   You should discuss the telephone curfew with your homestay family, but you should not speak on the phone later than 10.00pm in the evening (and earlier in some homes).  Also, please keep your voice down while using either your mobile phone or the home phone, particularly if you are using the phone in the evening.

Holidays:

You are not permitted under any circumstances, to travel out of Auckland unaccompanied during your stay here at Takapuna Grammar School.  You are permitted to travel with your homestay family if they invite you to do so.  There are many supervised trips and tours that are available to you during your stay.  These include the South Island, Bay of Islands, Bay of Plenty, and even Fiji and Australia, and many wonderful short term trips to areas in and around Auckland and its close environs.  Some of these trips include horse riding, go-karting, kayaking and mountain biking.  Mrs Eaton the Homestay Co-ordinator has all the details of these trips in her office so please ensure you come and ask her about what is available.

You should take advantage of the many sightseeing attractions and activities in and around Auckland during the weekends; and also plan to take a supervised trip away to one of the many beautiful places in New Zealand, during the school holidays.   There is an Information Centre in Victoria Road (near the ferry) which has lots of information on things happening in and around Auckland and New Zealand.  Take a visit there and see what is on offer.

If your homestay family has to travel and you stay temporarily at another homestay, you will need to surrender your key and not return to your homestay while your family are away.  This is very important to remember, and you should not enter the homestay under any circumstances, while your homestay is away, and only return to your homestay when the family have returned themselves.

Travel in and around New Zealand:

If you are considering travelling in or around any part of New Zealand while you are enrolled at Takapuna Grammar School, you MUST seek permission from Leanne Eaton, the International Homestay Co-Ordinator, and accordingly, permission will be sought from your natural parents.  If you find that after your contract has finished with the school you have some time before your departure to your country or origin and you would like to travel to any destination outside Auckland, you must liaise with Mrs Eaton regarding this – even after you have left the school.  Under these circumstances, permission for travel has to be sought from your natural parents, even if it is overnight.  Permission must first be obtained, and your parents, homestay and the school need to be aware of your whereabouts and intended travel plans.  Please see Mrs Eaton regarding any intended travel plans.

Having Friends Over:

If you are wanting to have friends over at any time, please ensure that you check with your homestay host first.  Many homestay’s prefer you to do you’re socialising outside of their home, and it is respectful and polite to let your homestay know if you want to have friends over.  Likewise, you must ask permission for a friend to sleep over at your homestay.  It is not normally permitted, but under certain circumstances, you may ask if this is ok with your homestay family.  Your homestay will require plenty of notice, and please do not be offended if they do not allow “sleep overs” in their homestay.

Cars and Driving:

Please inform Ms Baker if you have a vehicle and are driving it to school.   Ms Baker will need to sight your license conditions to give approval for you to drive your car to school.

New International Student’s Centre:

The International Student’s Centre is now located in one large area, in the lower ground floor of the main administration block.  This area is available for use by all international students, and houses several computers and also kitchen facilities.  All International Staff are housed in this area, apart from Mr Terry Holding whose office is found in the main administration block.  This is a wonderful place to come and meet other students, make friends, study and find out about all the exciting ‘once in a life time’ trips and tours available to you.

Homestay Interview:

Mrs Leanne Eaton or Mrs Maria Faulkner, will call you in to their office several times during your stay here at Takapuna Grammar School for an interview.  This is a chance to express your feelings and talk about any issues which may arise during your stay.  Please feel free to go and see Mrs Eaton or Mrs Faulkner in their office at any time during your stay if there is anything you would like to talk about regarding your homestay.

Homestay:

It is a requirement of the Ministry of Education that you are living in approved accommodation.  This means that you must live in an approved homestay, or alternatively, with a designated caregiver; these designated caregiver’s must be police vetted and approved by the school.  A designated caregiver MUST be a friend of the family or family member, and under no circumstances are you permitted to change homestay without first discussing this with Mrs Eaton, Ms Lijun Qiu or Mr Andrew Park.  Under no circumstances are you able to live in a ‘flatting’ type situation.  There may be serious consequences if it is found that you have changed homestay without notifying or discussing this with the school.
